Zentangle
Artist Statement
The zentangle that I created is a dove with olive branches as the background. The dove is drawn with its wings open and is tilted. The olive branches are also drawn in the direction the dove is going. One of the elements used the element of shapes and lines, using these different types of elements helped me create a variety of different patterns. Another element that I used was texture in the doves stomach and tail. In the stomach, I drew small circles in order to show the softness of the dove, as well as in the tail by drawing curved lines. One of the principles that I chose to use was different patterns that were drawn in each feather, in order to depict them from one another. Also, value was used in my project which helps one identify the thickness/thinness in the drawing. For example, in the dove's tail I used dark curved lines in order to show the thickness of the tail. Another principle that I used was perspective, by drawing the dove bigger it made the illusion that the dove was in front of the branches. The tools that I used when doing creating this zentangle was a sharpie pen (fine point), eraser, pencil, and ruler. The techniques that I used when doing this was having complete focus when creating the patterns in the dove and in the background. I also drew every line/shape carefully, trying to prevent any mistakes from happening. At first, I sketched different designs in my sketchbook, in order to get a general idea of what I was trying to achieve. After this, I drew the 3 rectangles where the zentangle was going to be drawn in and carefully drew an outline of the dove and branches. Then, I began to create different designs in the dove and in the olive branches. I decided to draw a dove for my project because it reminded me of something special and an event. When I was around 13 years old, I had my first communion and I chose my favorite aunt to be my godmother. As a gift, she gave me a necklace of a dove. A dove represents the peace and purity that the Holy Spirit is giving one. The olive branches were drawn as the background, because that is what represents the peace, as it connects with the dove in a religious way. When creating this artwork, I tried to relate this to something important and special to me. My goals as an artist is to relate my drawings to something significant to me. As I chose this animal to be part of my zentangle, I knew that I did meet this goal. Another goal that I had when starting this was to try to prevent any earsing to occur. However, I did not meet this goal, as I made some mistakes and erased them to make them even better. Although, I did make some mistakes, some of them became one of my favorite patterns. Overall, I learned that mistakes can occur at times but they can make your artwork better as you may like them in the end. I also learned that zentangles are a way of relaxation, making one find new things about oneself. This piece will influence my future artwork because I learned many things from it as I can use them in my next project.
